Beyond Pests: The Power of Community in Independent Business
Starting Grizzly Pest Solutions in Southern Oregon was one of the biggest leaps of my career. While running a business means wearing every hat—technician, customer service, scheduler, and marketer—it also comes with a unique set of challenges that you can't fully prepare for until you're in the thick of it.
Fortunately, I haven't had to navigate this journey in a vacuum.
From Coworkers to Business Owners Across the Pacific Northwest
Before founding Grizzly Pest Solutions, I spent years working alongside a core group of talented pest control professionals. When the company we worked for underwent a major corporate shift after being acquired by a private equity firm, several of us knew it was time to chart our own course.
Out of that transition, four independent, locally owned companies were born across Oregon and Washington:
- H3 Pest Control: Founded by my good friend and mentor Cameron Yamaura in the greater Willamette Valley area.
- Ponderosa Pest Control: Started by Bob Wade, serving Bend and Central Oregon.
- HoneyDew Pest Control: Founded by Austin Miller, serving the Tri-Cities region in Washington.
- Grizzly Pest Solutions: My company, serving Medford and the surrounding Rogue Valley.
We all took different paths and opened in different regions, but the shared experience of building something from scratch bonded us even further.
Why Independent Collaboration Matters
In many industries, business owners view everyone else in their field purely as competition. Because we serve distinct geographical markets across the Northwest, we get to view each other as partners and trusted sounding boards instead of rivals.
That network is invaluable for a few key reasons:
- Solving Complex Pest Problems: Pest biology can vary dramatically from the high desert of Bend to the moist valleys of Western Oregon. Having a group of experienced owners to bounce technical questions off ensures our customers get the best possible solutions.
- Sharing Best Practices: We regularly swap ideas on new, eco-friendly treatment methods, efficient routing software, and effective equipment so we can continually improve our service quality.
- Recommending Trusted Professionals: When friends, family, or past customers move outside the Rogue Valley, I want to ensure they are in good hands. Having a network of owners I know personally means I can confidently send people to local companies that uphold the same standards of integrity and quality that we do at Grizzly.
Trusted Local Recommendations
If you or someone you know needs reliable, high-quality pest control outside of Southern Oregon, these are the local operators I personally trust and recommend:
- Willamette Valley / Salem / Albany / Eugene: If you are looking for dedicated, local service in northern Oregon, check out Cameron Yamaura at https://h3pestcontrol.com/.
- Central Oregon / Bend: For residential and commercial pest management around Bend, reach out to Bob Wade at https://www.ponderosapests.com.
- Tri-Cities, Washington: If you're in Kennewick, Pasco, or Richland, connect with Austin Miller at https://honeydewpest.com.
Looking Ahead
Building a business takes hard work, but having a strong network of peers makes all the difference. I'm grateful for the long-standing friendships that grew out of our early years in the industry, and I look forward to growing alongside these great independent companies for years to come.
